Holland sits where Lake Macatawa opens to Lake Michigan: a downtown of brick storefronts along 8th Street with heated sidewalks that stay clear all winter, Hope College a few blocks east, Windmill Island at the river, and the beaches at Holland State Park at the end of Ottawa Beach Road. It is the largest city on this stretch of the lakeshore and the one most visitors know, for Tulip Time in May and for the dunes in summer. It is also a working town, with a large Latino community whose churches, restaurants and businesses shape the east and south sides, manufacturing on the north side, and neighborhoods that stretch into Holland Township and Park Township beyond the city line. This page gathers what happens here.
Happening this week
Holland carries the most listings each week: downtown events from the Downtown Holland calendar, Hope College lectures and performances, the Herrick District Library schedule, Holland Civic Center shows, and the Saturday and Wednesday farmers market in season. The full week for the whole lakeshore is in the weekly events roundup, with each item marked by town.
Latest decisions
Holland City Council meets on the first and third Wednesdays; Holland Public Schools and West Ottawa Public Schools boards, Holland Township and Park Township boards, and the Holland Board of Public Works round out the local bodies, with the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners above them. Look-aheads run on Sunday and wrap-ups on Friday under Civic; items tagged Holland are the ones that touch this page.
